Vote for Queensland's best Fish & Chips

Australian Fish and Chips Awards 2017

The Fisheries Research and Development Corporation in partnership with the state and territory fishing industry councils is looking for Australia’s best fish and chips.

In 2017 the FRDC will coordinate nationally the judging of the Australian Fish & Chips Awards. The FRDC will use a new on-line system for judging the fish and chip category for both the state, territory (jurisdictions) and National Seafood Industry Awards.

The National Fish and Chips Awards start with each State and Territory running their own individual awards. The winners from each State and Territory then go head to head to compete for the National title. The National Seafood Awards Ceremony will be held in Sydney at the Convention Centre on 28 September 2017 as part of the Biannual Seafood Directions Conference.

The Queensland state winner will be announced at the Gala Dinner at the Queensland Seafood Industry Awards in Brisbane on 30th June 2017.

Awards Categories

In 2017 two fish and chip award categories will run each jurisdiction – people’s choice and judge’s choice. The winners from both categories will [in each jurisdiction] will go through to compete for the National Award.

Chosen by consumers, this award will be presented to a food outlet that has demonstrated excellence in consistently providing customers with quality seafood. Fish and chips lovers across Australia will be able to nominate and vote for their favourite outlet via Votes for each outlet will be shown on a leader board and updated daily. Check out Queensland’s leader board.

Once the jurisdiction awards are completed the counters will be re-set and the National People Choice Awards voting will be started afresh, with only the state winners.

The finalists for this category will be selected from the People’s Choice Awards category and will be judged by a panel of judges as “mystery shoppers”. This award will be presented to a take away food outlet that has demonstrated excellence in consistently providing customers with quality seafood.

Voting Criteria

Fish and chip shops will be judged against five criteria by their customers and a secret panel to find the winners of the two categories. Each criteria has been weighted and reinforce the importance of taste and service, but not missing the point that information and choice are important in a consumer’s decision making process.

  • Taste [50%] – the seafood tastes good.
  • Service [35%] – the service meets customer expectations.
  • Choice [5%] – Seafood menu offers a range of seafood, including Australian seafood.
  • Information [5%] – Customers are provided accurate information about the seafood.
  • Labelling [5%] – the menu complies with the Australian Standard for Fish Names and, highlights the seafood’s provenance (i.e. is labelled accurately).

The FRDC will close the public view on the website two weeks prior to the awards night and last votes will close seven days (one week at 5.00pm) prior to the Queensland Seafood Industry Awards night.
